Why did he resign ?

Because deep inside he knew Anwar could not become PM. So he delayed the power shift while planning a strategy. But he was indebted to Anwar and was bound by his promise. Nevertheless pressure kept mounting from people around him who did not want Anwar. He succumbed.

 There was a turmoil after the resignation, but I think it would finally settle.

We must learn to do without him.
